One Last Kiss

By Stephanie Bonvissuto

I can still remember this, our very first kiss
Lost on a neon-lit dance floor, me wanting more,
so I stole it right off of your fabled red lips.

It took just three days for me to say, I love you!
and another seven for you to return the call.
You said, this is scary and I said, yes, I know,
then we made love that frightened us all night long.

I introduced to family and friends
and by name to each of my moaning ghosts.
And how I swore that this time would be the last time
(which is more that can be said for most.)

Then I found you in the bar without me
and in the backseat of a car that wasn’t mine.
So I spilled your drink, knocked on the window
and asked between gasps if you had the time.

Then came that last awful night.
The rain slashing down, me bathed in porch light
Down on my knees, begging please don’t ever leave me!
For I can’t breathe without you!!
I can’t think without you!!
My heart stops without you!!
Without you, I am dead!!

You should have listened. Why didn’t you listen?
I meant what I had said.

So here am I, laid out in waxed serenity
My satin bed made up of so many shattered memories.
Wondering if I still have the strength within me
To stand up
find you
and steal just one last kiss
off those fabled red lips.
