Nearly a mountain girl, eh? One Canadian ‘connection’ I forgot to mention. I appeared on a UK TV quiz show once. One of the questions I got right was ‘What is the capital of the Canadian province of Alberta?’ So there!

Since I have at least an hour and two more double scotches to go before retiring, I thought I’d keep myself occupied and amused by commenting on one small aspect of this post. Happy Canada Day.

I went to Canada twice. My experiences may be summarised thus:

Toronto	Didn’t like it. Too cold and impersonal. Too many gold diggers.

Niagra Falls	The grandeur of the falls paled beside the tackyness of the resort mentality

St John’s	Loved it. Real people, warm and friendly. Fell in love with Jeannie Brown.

St Pierre	Harmless enough. Got the drunkest – and luckiest - I’ve ever been. Long story!

Port Alfred	The town band belonged in a Monsieur Hulot film. Prairie grass sailed mindlessly along the High Street.

Quebec	Had an argument with a shop assistant who wanted me to speak French. Had to speak French to get into a nightclub, which turned out to be very boring.

Halifax Got duped into a blind date with a girl who only wanted me to pay for dinner before she went home again. Another girl called Ruth fell in love with me. (I was a sailor, you understand.) Got my first tattoo.

Quite a mixture. Fond memories, overall. Which bit do you live in?
